 To make your own

paper mache` paste you need:

 
1. Mom and Dad's permission
2. You need something to cover(example: balloon or something sturdy built from cardboard)
2. Flour
3. Water
4. A large spoon for mixing
5. Newspaper cut into strips or newsprint paper
6. A large container to put your mixture in

Procedure:
1. Cover area where you are working with a tablecloth or newspaper...This is messy!
2. In the large container or bowl pour in 1/2 water and 1/2 flour and mix.
3. The consistency should be like a thick soup!
4. Take strips of newspaper one at a time and dip them in the paste making sure to soak them. completely then apply to the item or area that you are trying to cover.
5. Leave you item to dry on a non stick surface like wax paper.
*Make sure you are overlapping and smoothing out the paper as you work. Two coats usually make a hard enough form for painting when done!

 Build Your own 3-D Lighthouse

Materials: 9x12" cardboard(2),Masking tape, newspaper, paper mache paste (flour and water mixture), 3 empty soup or yogurt cans, oaktag 3x12" and smaller pieces, (paper towel )cardboard tubes, paint (assorted colors), brushes, sand and details of your choice.

Procedure:
1.Tape three cups or cans down to 9x12" cardboard.
2. Tape the second piece to the top. The tape should reach aroud the sides to hold the pieces together securely. Stuff empty spaces with newspaper.
3. Tape cardboard tube to the top of your base. make the top of the tower by cutting out a 2" circle from a small piece of
oaktag, cut a line to the center of the circle and twist to make a cone shape. tape to secure it.
4. A house is made by folding 3"x12" oaktag into a box and taping (criss-cross tape to secure). Crumple a small piece of newspaper to stuff inside to keep the square shape. Take a smaller piece of oaktag, fold in half and tape to the cube to make a house shape. Tape the house down next to the tower.
5. Have paper mache paste ready in a small bucket. Have strips of newspaper ready also. Dip one strip at a time into the paste and drape and smoothe onto the base of the lighthouse. Start at the base and continue until the entire project is covered. Allow a few days-week to dry.
6. Basecoat entire project with white paint (any).
When dry (1-2 days), draw on details such as boardwalk, rocks, catwalk, pathways, windows, doors, etc.
7. Begin painting the base the colors of your choice, continue all the way till your done.
8. Add your details last of all, have fun and be creative.
